President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition Raila Odinga who were in prospects of Kenyans as political enemies shocked Kenyans when they appeared in front of Harambe House and shook hands. It could be said that handshake which resulted in Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) has served the interest of both Mr. Uhuru and former prime minister.
At the threshold of handshake, it was believed that it was for the good of our dystopia society. That is because of the things that Raila stood for before.
Raila Odinga stopped talking about the injustices in Kenya’s history and that has made him to loose some of his supporters who are questioning the dubious BBI.
BBI created 70 extra constituencies. Mt Kenya got a large share of the 70 constituencies and according to further proposals by the BBI, having more constituencies the region is in prime position to clinch the proposed post of Prime Minister. This is making Raila to be alienated by some of his stronghold.
Raila Odinga through BBI has lost his personality as a democrat. He is no longer speaking against injustices that are affecting the country. It is not easy to tell what Raila Odinga is standing for today unlike before handshake. His credentials about being an agent of change and reforms are getting lost.
Deputy President William Ruto through hustler narrative is being seen as a reformer.
Handshake has made Kenyans to suffer through corruption and injustices since there is no strong opposition to put the government to account. Raila abandoned the people and is no longer fighting with them.
BBI has encouraged the culture of demagoguery and sycophancy. Those who dare to question it are being ousted or impeached while those supporting it are being protected.
As it stands, there is still time for Raila to regain his former position and begin the long road of winning back the masses. If anything, the BBI dress down by high court leaves president Kenyatta weak, with no cards against him and at his mercy; especially now that the president is not in good terms with his deputy. The choice is his!
