Bonchari by-election has shown some political significance and ODM party should have it as a lesson. ODM party started lamenting immediately the voting started something that have shown that handshake is not serving its purpose.
When Uhuru and Raila shook hands on 9th March 2018, they said they did it to save Kenya from electoral injustices and to promote peace. But what Kenyans witnessed in Bonchari amounts to opposite of the purpose of handshake.
ODM has been complaining of harassment by the state in the recent by-electios. To date, the party holds the view they were short-changed in Matungu. Bonchari being in Nyanza, ODM should have been given a chance.
“What we have witnessed in the by-elections in Bonchari and Juja is an abuse of police powers and an arrogant display of impunity by few overzealous bellicose government functionaries,” said Raila Odinga.
After handshake, Oburu Odinga, elder brother to Raila Odinga talked with expensive pride while disclosing that ODM party and Raila enjoyed the support of the “deep state”. That was a clear indication that ODM believed in the deep state. As ODM prepares for the next general election they should realize that deep state might not be embracing the hand shake.
ODM just as Orengo said should know that, “government eats its own people”. Since handshake, ODM and it’s leader have been so reluctant to rebuke government impunity, the signature that endowed them to the masses. I do not know their strategy of winning back the masses but perhaps, it’s time for the party to recause and begin fighting impunity. When Jubilee broke and Ruto was being punished by the government, ODM supporters celebrated. In Bonchari by-election it is ODM that is being mistreated.
If handshake and BBI is about Raila’s next year politics, then he should reconsider his strategies. He should embark to his routes as a reformer. It is now clear that ODM might not get state support in the next general elections.
