A group of influential political figures and politicians from the vote-rich Mt Kenya region on Saturday convened a secret meeting for elected and non-elected leaders from the region in Nyeri county.
By the time of publishing this article, more details of the meeting which kicked off at around 11 Am remained scanty as efforts by journalists and bloggers to get more information bore no fruits, a clear indication that most of the agenda was secret.
It is however clear that the meeting is currently underway at Lusoi resort on the outskirts of Nyeri town under the leadership of Nyandarua county governor Francis Kimemia and his Murang’a counterpart Mwangi Wa Iria.
The meeting comes at the time when the region which is well known for its political unity has been completely taken over by a strong wave of division even as the fast-approaching 2022 general elections continues to draw closer. With about one year until the next year’s polls, President Uhuru Kenyatta’s legacy and political tactics have led to the emergence of two political factions which are now engaging in endless ugly public spats across his home turf.
The fallout between the head of State and his Deputy President William Ruto marked the beginning of the showdown as a section of influential political heavyweights from the region has vowed to remain true to the course and honour the initial agreement that William Ruto will succeed Uhuru and that the entire region will merge forces and rally behind the man from Sugoi.
Speculations are rife that the meeting is aimed at coming up with strategies and methods of bringing back the unity of the region and reaching the final path for the interests of democracy and popular opinions to end the bad state of Mt Kenya’s politics.
