Former Gem constituency Member of Parliament Washington Jakoyo Midiwo has passed on. The former lawmaker died on Monday 14th evening with more details surrounding his health and cause of death remaining scanty by 7:30 PM.
Jakoyo served as the Member of Parliament for Gem in Siaya county from 2002 to 2017 where he lost to Elisha Odhiambo during the ODM party preliminaries and later during the general elections after he defected from the party citing irregularities and opted for an independent party ticket. Midiwo who is a first cousin to ODM party leader Raila Odinga however made a u-turn last year and returned to ODM in preparation for the upcoming 2020 general elections where he was hoping to reclaim his seat.
While confirming the death, the ODM party eulogised the departed soul as a gallant son of the soil who always told the truth without disclosing more details.
“Sad day for our party. We have just lost a gallant son of the soil, a founder member of the Change Movement & a three-time Member of Parliament for Gem Hon. Jakoyo Midiwo. He was a defender of the party & never shied away from speaking the truth. To the family, we say POLE SANA,” ODM party posted
On Sunday, questions had emerged on why Raila, his brother Oburu and Midiwo skipped the burial of their uncle in Alego/ Usonga in Siaya county despite their expected attendance.
He died at the age of 54.
