University of Nairobi’s Senior Lecturer and Political Analyst Herman Manyora has come out to comment on the new law that the political leaders should have an academic degree.
Speaking through his YouTube channel, Manyora said that though the work of MCAs and MPs which are legislation, oversight and representation require education but not the way people are putting it.
While commenting on Elgeyo – Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen’s move to scrap degree rule for aspirants, Manyora said that Murkomen is doing it for political reasons.
“Kipchumba has a point except that he is doing it for political reasons, he doesn’t believe in it. He is just saying it because Ruto has said that he want to save those without degree,” Manyora stated.
Manyora also gave examples of US Presidents without degrees. He also gave examples of world’s billionaires without degrees.
“Out of fourty five US presidents, nine never had a degree. Great billionaires like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg with billions of dollars never went to college,” he stated.
“Throughout history men without college education, without training have come up with scientific discoveries,” he added.
While continuing, he said that if MPs were doing what is needed in the law then they need a degree.
“If MPs were doing what is stated in the law then they need a degree. You cannot legislate without education, you cannot make laws without education, you cannot interrogate the bill, you cannot oversight the government without education,” Manyora said.
He said that MPs doesn’t do their functions, instead they only go to funerals something that does not need a degree.
“MPs don’t do anything that requires education so let them stop bothering people about education because what they do does not require education,” he added.
Manyora continued by saying that in Kenya there is no education that can produce a degree. An education system is supposed to produce thinkers.
He also asserted that the best education is the one that produces critical thinkers.
