Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the Tuesday morning heist at Equity Bank Matuu.
The two, who are boda boda operators in the area, are alleged to have assisted the five thugs to escape after the robbery.
The gang escaped through the back door drove off amid a chase. All police facilities were put on alert to lay roadblocks and stop the robbers but they changed tack and used a motorcycle to flee.
The area police boss Ali Mohammed said the two boda boda operators are giving detectives crucial information that will lead to the arrest of the rest five criminals.
The robbers made away with approximately Ksh 500,000 which was mostly stolen from customers at the banking hall.
“Rosina Syombua was robbed Ksh 51,860, Rhoda Mbithe Hamisi Ksh 3,500, James Mulaka Mutuku Ksh 11,000, Lawrence Ngugi 200,000, Mary Kumama Ksh 4,500 while an unknown amount of money was robbed from one of the bank tellers,” the police report said.
Meanwhile the two police officers manning the premises are nursing injuries sustained in the robbery.
Patrick Omusebe, police officer who was guarding Equity Bank Matuu when armed robbers raided, suffered serious injuries on his private parts.
Omusebe and his female colleague Dorothy Opili were attacked and disarmed by the robbers moments before they made their way into the banking hall.
Omusebe sustained bruises on both hands and pain on his private parts after the robbers beat him to unarm and rob him of his duty AK47 riffle s/no 5526385 loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.

The two police officers are nursing injuries at Matuu Level 4 Hospital. They were rushed to the facility after police responding to the robbery found them incapacitated in the banking hall.
