As the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta narrows, ODM leader Raila Odinga and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka are said to be holding clandestine meetings behind the cameras that may lead to a coalition between the two.
According to sources even the confidants of the two have been left out of the closed door meetings between the two that have been taking place for around two months.
As per a Wiper official who talked to The Star, the two have been having talks as equals and it has not been disclosed how the stages of the talks are as per now.
“It’s true, they have been talking but at their level (as party chiefs). We can’t tell how far they have reached, but it is a fact, they have been talking,” a senior Wiper official informed the Star.
Sources closer to Raila’s inner circle also confirmed that the two have been having talks in the past two months.
This is emerging few days after Kalonzo’s Ukambani leaders led by Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua threatened to abandon Kalonzo if he backs the former Prime Minister’s presidency.
“Should our party leader ever make the decision to support the Rt. Hon Raila Amollo Odinga for presidency, we respectfully assure him of two very painful outcomes,” Wambua said in a statement he read.
According to the Ukambani leaders, Kalonzo’s only option if he is to play second fiddle is to support one of the One Kenya Alliance principle.
“What we are saying that our people are saying is Kalonzo cannot support Raila again. We can support any other person within OKA but not Raila,” Wambua stated.
The two formed coalition ahead of 2013 and 2017 elections. Kalonzo later left Raila to form One Kenya Alliance together with Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetangula and Gideon Moi which is also having difficult time in choosing its presidential candidate.
