With Kenya’s hot political scene growing turbulent by the day, President Uhuru Kenyatta is keen on reaping from the handshake agreement with Raila Odinga by forming a winning coalition for 2022 presidential elections.
In an emerging report from a local daily, teams formed by the leaders are finalizing on a framework to share power.
“A draft agreement, framework agreement has been finalized and it had been taken upstairs to the party leaders of Jubilee and ODM. The ball is actually in their court to determine whether they want some changes in that framework and when we can actually sign it,” the media report quoted a high-ranking Jubilee party member.
ODM in the proposal will take produce a presidential candidate and the Jubilee party to nominate a running mate.
It is a foregone conclusion that veteran presidential candidate Raila Odinga will take a stab at the presidency for the 5th time, hoping that the system and deep state will give him a huge win.
Also in the deal is the sharing of cabinet positions and other lucrative government jobs, a move seen by pundits as a huge win for ODM party.
Sources familiar with the behind-the-scenes machinations and negotiations have also revealed that different parties will field individual candidates for the other electable positions.
While the ODM party seems to be winning big in the proposed agreement, Raila Odinga, however, must agree to rule for one term until 2027.
Currently, ODM is in a limbo after former NASA partners decamped and formed OKA coalition, leaving Odinga without a formidable partner.
OKA alliance has given ODM tough conditions before they enter into any formal agreement.
And with Ruto seen as the man to beat for the presidency, ODM are keen to finding a way of scaling the mountain to battle for the millions of votes at stake.
