It is now clear that as 2022 elections approach the support of governors is more important to presidential candidates. Governors help in influencing the support of their people.
According to a recent observation the opposition leader Raila Odinga is having the support of at least 17 governors while his major opponent Deputy President William Ruto has the support of at least 10 governors.
ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi has the support of one governor same to Kanu leader Gideon Moi who is also having the support of one governor.
The observation that was done by The Star also indicates that Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula are not having the backing of any governor. This is after Bungoma governor Wycliffe Wangamati who was elected on Ford Kenya ticket moved to support ODM.
The political stand of 16 governors is not yet clear.
Raila Odinga is enjoying the backing of almost all the governors from Western Kenya except Trans Nzoia.
In Luo Nyanza Raila is enjoying the support of all governors except Migori Governor Okoth Obado.
Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana and his Murang’a counterpart Mwangi Wa Iria are expected to be on the ballot as presidential aspirant.
County bosses whose political stands are not yet clear includes Mutahi Kahiga (Nyeri), Muthoni Njuki (Tharaka Nithi), Patrick Khaemba (Trans Nzoia), Martine Wambora (Embu), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Kiraitu Murungi (Meru) and Amos Nyaribo (Nyamira).
Governors will have a significant effect in the outcome of the next general elections because of their financial support and influence since they can conduct a grass root mobilizations and campaigns.
