Social media has been left abuzz after the daughter of former Mount Elgon Member of Parliament John Serut took to twitter to make appeals for financial help to raise funds to settle his growing medical bill.
In the post, the family is seeking help to settle the medical bill that currently stands at Sh20 million.
Chemoss Serut took to her Twitter handle to make the public appeal.
“Hey guys, so a lot of you don’t know me but I’m here requesting your help today. My father’s name is John Serut and he’s been unwell for a while now,” Chemoss tweeted.
According to Chemoss, the former legislator is suffering from multiple myeloma, a variety of blood cancer that affects several body organs. Serut was diagnosed with the disease in January 2020.
“He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January of 2020. Since then, we’ve had medical bills totaling to about 20 million,” she continued.
His medical expenses have accumulated to Sh14 million this year alone, and the family needs Sh5 million for insurance cover that his treatment has already exhausted.
“Our most recent bill was slightly over five million and we need the amount on top to cater for an insurance cover as we have exhausted the existing one due to bills amounting to 14 million this year alone,” the tweet said.
The family set up a fundraiser on the M-changa platform which has already raised Sh248,960 at the time of this publication.
Serut was Mt. Elgon’s Member of Parliament twice. He was first elected to parliament in 1997 and served until 2007.
He also became the Mt. Elgon Member of the National Assembly again from March 10, 2013, to July 16, 2017.
Serut was also appointed Assistant Minister for National Development between the years 2006 and 2007.
The post divided Kenyans in the middle as many accused him of being the mastermind behind heinous crimes committed in the region while he was a sitting MP.
