Moments after three fugitves were captured in Kitui, government has broken silence with interior CS Fred Matiang’i commenting on Kshs60 million reward on the heads of three fugitives who escaped Kamiti.

The directorate of Criminal Investigations promised to reward anyone with information that would lead to the arrest of three fugitives who escaped the highly guarded Kamiti Maximum prison in the wee hours of Monday morning.

On Monday, DCI offered 60M for any person whose information would lead to the capture of the three fugitives.

“PRISON BREAK! A reward of Sh60 Million will be offered to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the following three terror suspects, who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison today at 1am,” a statement by DCI read.

Matiang’i was asked whether Paul Mulati, the man who led other villagers in Mwingi to capture the three escapees, would be given the reward.

Matiang’i however did not make it clear whether the government will keep its promise or not.

He asked Kenyans not to speculate on the issue but instead wait for the government’s response.

“No…no…no, we are not going there at the moment. Let us not be speculative about this. We are going to work on this meticulously as my colleagues have said,” Matiang’i said.

Matiang’i quickly went ahead to explain measures that they had put in place to avoid such an occurrence in future.

He was speaking at the correctional facility after receiving the convicts who were airlifted from Kitui.

The three, Musharraf Abdalla, Joseph Juma and Mohammed Abdi, were nabbed in Mwingi,  Kitui county as they tried to make their way to Garissa before crossing over to Somalia.

The locals were able to identify the suspects because they were strangers in the area and behaved unusually as they continued with their journey.

“They were walking beside the bushes but they would not leave the road so that they don’t get lost because they are strangers here, they were identified when they entered Endau Malani, but we do not know how they reached Endau. We are not sure if they used a vehicle,” Mulati told Citizen digital
