At least 15 people have been confirmed dead after a bus was swept by water as the driver attempted to cross Enziu River in Kitui County.
While more details are still coming in, Mwingi East Sub County Police Commander, Joseph Yakan, confirmed the incident adding that ten other people were rescued and are undergoing first aid.
“A bus drowned here and we are still recovering bodies that are still inside the bus. The bus is not even visible, it has been submerged.
“We have recovered 16 bodies. 10 people were also rescued alive,” stated Yakan.
Several people are feared dead and scores missing after a school bus capsized while crossing a bridge in Mwingi.
In a chilling video seen by continentaltv.co.ke, the bus capsized while crossing the flooded Enziu River in Kitui County.
Reports indicate 10 people were rescued from the incident while several others are still missing.
The victims, who were passengers of St Joseph’s Seminary – Mwingi bus were members of Mwingi Catholic Church, were heading for wedding.
Witnesses who were at the venue were still helping with rescue operations at the time of this publishing.
Yakan further confirmed that the driver of the bus perished during the tragic incident.
“This is a river and it was flooding. The driver lost control and slided into a ditch. The bus capsized next to the bridge. The driver has also died. The bus was leaving Mwingi Central towards Nuu in Mwingi East,” he revealed.
